All formulated role-plays put into motion at MoM should be consistent with the site’s story timeline (please refer to MoM’s storyline).
MoM is a place for people aged 13 and above to come and role-play in the Harry Potter-verse. That means everything and anything about canon within limits is acceptable to role play about - there will be nothing to do with other compositions that lie within the fantasy genre such as Lord of the Rings, etc.
It stands to reason that if you come to role-play at MoM, you shall abide by the rules that have been implemented for the betterment of the site. That includes role-playing rules as well. Any person(s) who disobey these rules will be dealt with accordingly.
You have been warned.
A. Basic role-playing etiquette:
I. Open vs. Closed
1. When starting a role-play, decide whether or not it is going to be open or closed. In an open role-play, anyone may join in the thread, and may take the thread in any direction they wish. In a closed role-play, only those individuals that the thread's starter wishes can add onto the thread.
2. To indicate if a thread is open or closed, please add the word that describes your role-play into the topic description so that it is easy to find. It is also wise to indicate the state of the thread in the first post either at the top or the bottom.
3. If, having started a closed thread, you find that there are people posting who should not be, feel free to contact a moderator for the forum in which the thread is located, and they can delete the post.
4. Anyone who repeatedly posts in a closed thread without permission will be issued a warning. 3 warnings in a row will result the person in being banned from RP-ing for a length of time deemed suitable by the moderator.
II. Grammar and post length
1. Effort should be made by everyone involved in a role-playing thread to keep the grammar and spelling as readable as possible. No net-speak or slang will be allowed, as your character would definitely not use them in everyday language.
2. All role-plays should be done in the third person tense, and written as though the events occurred in the past. For example: "Hermione walked into the libary and sat down to do her homework" NOT "I walk into the library, sit down and do my homework."
2. An effort should be made to keep posts in role-plays from being only a sentence or two long. While the length of post that people can make range from just a few words to paragraphs long, the two extremes are a bit wearisome to read. You should attempt to write perhaps a paragraph for each post. Shorter posts are acceptable, as are longer ones, if they are called for, but generally the longer the posts are, the better.
3. If you need to make an additional comment as yourself and not as your character, you should use the abbreviation "OOC" before your statement indicating that you are Out Of Character. It is also useful to put all OOC comments in brackets to separate them.
4. We reserve the right to delete any post! Short, 5-words-or-less type posts that didn't really add anything to the thread, things out of topic, posts that look like you're just trying to get your post count up etc etc can be deleted. Especially those of objectionable material and anything we just feel is unsuitable to be posted here. I will repeat, we can delete or move anything at any time, for any reason whether we supply one to you or not. No whining is allowed. Deal with it.
III. Control of characters
1. While role-playing it is important to remember that you have control of only your own character. You can have your character say or do anything that you like within the rules, but you can't force any other character to do something without their consent. Not a twitch or a blink of an eye. Leave it to the other character to decide whether or not to twitch or blink an eye.
2. Your posts should be open ended, so that they allow the person you are role-playing with to make a decision regarding the outcome of a specific event. For example, if, in your post, you curse someone and say that the curse hit them in the chest, you are not allowing your role-playing partner the opportunity to do things such as dodge or deflect the incoming curse.
3. If you do perform an action for somebody else in one of your posts, you must get their permission to do so. This goes for something as inconsequential as saying that the person you are talking to "looked worried." If it is not in that character's persona to be worried by news such as that you are telling them, then they may object.
4. Role-playing a jerk of any kind is not allowed. Harrassing a player or controling their actions without their consent is not RPing. Hiding behind the excuse that it was "in character" will not be tolerated.
5. If you need to role-play the actions of someone who is not registered on the boards, and is not a member of canon (A character from the books themselves) then you may do so in your posts. You may also role-play the actions of any pets that you might have or magical creatures you may run across in course of your ‘adventure’.
6. If you need to use a character such as those in the above rule frequently for a given role-play, you can register that person (or thing) on the boards, and request that they be given visitor status. These requests will be reviewed before approval.
7. In certain situations, you may be granted the ability to role-play a superior’s actions. This only applies to that assignment in particular, and if you do something with the superior's character that they do not like, rest assured, you will be punished.
B. Content of Role-plays
IV. Crossovers
1. There will be no crossover role-plays allowed at MoM. This means that you will not be permitted to role-play as, or an encounter with, any character or being from other popular works of fantasy fiction, including, but not limited to: Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, etc.
2. Along these lines, you can't be a member of a race present only in one of these books and not in the Harry Potter books. This means that you cannot be an elf, Klingon, wookie, hobbit, or any fraction of one of these. If you role-play as such, you will be issued a warning.
3. Any person who is seen to be incorporating aspects of other fantasy personas will be warned to amend their character. These can include being related to such a character, carrying the weapon of such a character, or simply knowing and talking to such a character through letters. If they fail to act in an appropriate manner following the warning, then point loss will be incurred by the offending party.
4. Role-plays at MoM should be about exactly that: Your job & life with the ministry. If you feel the need for your character to visit Middle Earth or Tatooine then there are plenty of other places out there for you to role-play.
V. Items and Special Abilities
1. Special abilities such as becoming an animagus, is a complex process that can only be undertaken with special permission.
2. All magical mischief aids and other educational aids such as invisibility cloaks, time turners, and pensieves are not allowed without explicit permission. Such permission can be granted only by the RP committee; that is the admins and mods.
3. Invisibility cloaks are extremely rare, and therefore no one other than Harry Potter has them at this time. When a system is worked out when you can earn items such as an invisibility cloak, you will be notified. Points will be taken if you are caught using ANY of these items in you RP without actually having them in the personal items part of your resume.
4. Weapons of all kinds are prohibited at MoM. Severe penalties will be incurred if one is caught with contraband in their possession. Under no circumstances are swords, bows, long bows, knives, daggers, guns, or anything of that persuasion allowed at MoM. You are a ministry staff. A ministry staff does not carry weapons with oneself when going about their normal day-to-day duties. That includes family heirlooms and ornamental weapons. You carry a wand.
5. I repeat, severe penalties will be incurred if one is found with contraband, and dimissal will be imminent if one is found to have the intention of role-playing with a weapon or if one role-plays their character actually using a weapon against another persons, be they muggle or wizard/witch, magical creature or Ministry staff

Continue fr. above post
VI. Settings
1. During working hours, all RPs must take place in MoM premises or the outside world thread if you are on a field-assigment. If you would like to role-play a vacation to an island nation, or a trip home to your family estate, then you are welcome to do so. BUT this is only during that time, and should be wrapped up during that time.
3. If, when role-playing, your thread shifts its location from the forum where you started, you need to start a separate thread in the new location to carry on in and point the readers to the direction of the new thread to continue your RP.
4. Role-playing is allowed in all forums, and in fact you are encouraged to role-play every post that you make. There are some caveats here however. If you post somewhere that canonically a place where you are not freely allowed to go (inside the Minister’s Office for example), there is a small chance that an admin/mod could show up in the thread and take points for being out of bounds.
5. Don't contradict other members. Example: A person just said he teleported away. But then you say you grab him just before he does. Try and catch on to members motives. Maybe they want to leave the event or situation.
6. Always always read the previous posts before you to get a general idea of what is going on - remember you need to do this so you can react properly.
VII. Important Miscellany
1. All role-plays must take into account the current grand scheme of MoM RPG site. Any thread that contradicts MoM’s canon will be first closed and the thread's originator informed. If they come up with a way to fix the error, the thread will be re-opened and allowed to continue with the correction in place.
2. The Chimera is a multipurpose character played by several people to add more variety and spice to your RPs. He/She is allowed to jump in at any time to help you or to hinder you like a villain. Always be alert. If you need Chimera to play a particular NPC character, please PM Chimera with your request.
Other Points To Remember:
1. Please remember that you are to ALWAYS remain in character when RPing. That includes RPs in the MoM Threads, outside MoM, unless you are discussing some ideas and such that are not dealing with RPing.
2. You may title a topic that indicates you are seated at a table to show you are in a private conversation or perhaps even sitting alone. (example: "XXX's Table")
3. If you wish to show you have left your location or any of the other areas of the MoM and would like people to easily follow your thread, you may indicate to your post. You do not have to do this, but is suggested in order to show movement and for ease of following you around.
If you have any questions, problems or comments about the role-playing rules, please contact any of the admins/mods. Suggestions are most welcome as well.
Happy Role-Playing!
