Karl Vice

Karl Vice slumped deeper into his chair, physically tired from the piles of reports he had to go through all by himself, since the Department Head was absent and mentally exhausted from his earlier encounter with a certain irritating purple-eyed staff. Initially, the young Deputy Head had been ecstatic, if not proud when he received his promotion. For once, he had finally one-upped his long-time rival, Irvyn Quinlan in his career.

However, the joy was short-lived as he soon learnt about the rumours flying about regarding his sudden promotion. Whispers that he was too young, inexperienced and lacked skills got to him, and those poisonous words manifested into an evil sense of insecurity that lurks within the deep recesses of Vice’s mind.

That cold feeling of insecurity would still be asleep somewhere in the dark, musty and forgotten corner of his brain if that good-for-nothing Irvyn had not so deliberately dragged it out from its hiding place. Karl detested feeling weak and somehow, Irvyn always knew how to push his buttons or make Karl himself seem insignificant. Thus, it is pretty understandable why the Deputy Head loathed the man.

Massaging his throbbing temples from reading too much of the gratuitous, and not to mention mountainous pile of reports Karl heaved a sigh. He needed rest, but he knew he cannot afford putting off his work because they will only continue to pile up mercilessly and unfortunately, he had no one to share his load with.

Where on earth is Ms. Vance? If she had taken leave and gone for a holiday, she should have at least warned me beforehand. Karl thought miserably as he reached for his coffee cup while absently leafing through Irvyn’s long report on his last mission concerning the time turners.

Too engrossed in his chores, he almost dropped the delicate porcelain mug in his hand in shock when the communication crystal at his side, glowed to life; indicating an incoming call.

Karl waved his hands over the glowing cube, accepting the call. “Karl Vice, Department of Mysteries Deputy Head speaking. May I help you?” he answered tiredly.

A cheerful female voice projected from the cube, “Good afternoon, Sir. I’m Heletha Cormag from the Administration Department. I have a message for you from the Minister’s PA, Bernie O’Shea.”

“Speak,” Karl spoke tersely. Unconciously, his hands clenched the coffee mug tighter. More work! he almost snarled.

“Okay. Ms. O’Shea requires your presence immediately. It is regarding a matter of great importance. Oh! She also requests you to bring along the best Unspeakable from your department. Her words, not mine. Thank you and have a good day,” chirped Heletha before an audible click could be heard. She had disconnected.

“It is a matter of great importance? I wonder what it could be. And bring the best Unspeakable? Who?” Karl mused out loud, stroking his chin thoughtfully. After racking his brains for quite some time, he grudgingly concluded that besides him, Irvyn Quinlan would be the best Unspeakable in this department.

Once his decision was made, he rose, smoothed his robes and headed out of his office in search of that wayward staff of his.

Once Irvyn settled into his cubicle, he immediately busied himself by going through his latest notes on his last experiment failure. Chewing on the feathered tip of his quill he mulled over the reasons that may have caused the potion he concocted to fail to act as it should have been.

“Maybe I should have added less polyweed and put in more leechvine,” he muttered as he scrawled on a fresh parchment. “The fizzlebubs must have caused the potion to work reversely and thus resulting the specimen to have temporary amnesia instead of recalling forgotten memories. I need to work on that,” Irvyn’s fingers flew over the parchment in top speed as he scribbled down his ideas. “Some dragon fang powder should do the trick.”

Too absorbed in his work, he did not notice the dispersing of the huge crowd at the department entrance by the appearance of Karl Vice from his office. Nor was Irvyn aware of said man standing in right in front of his cubicle tapping his foot irritably as he cleared his throat. “Ahem.”

Irvyn waved his hands in dismissal, not bothering to even look up from his notes to find out who was the person addressing him. “Whatever it is, just leave the mission file. I’ll look into it later,” he said curtly. The scratching of his quill did not cease. “Hmmm… It seems stirring liquid clockwise thrice… will vaporise… Ahh… yes… counter-clockwise twice,” Irvyn mumbled disjointedly, pursing his lips for a moment before he resumed writing fervently.

“AHEM!”

The loud clearing of throat broke Iryvn’s precious train of thought. Mildly annoyed, he plastered his most sickeningly sweet smile on his face and tore his eyes from his work, to be greeted with an impatient glare from his superior. “Oh, Sir, It is you. To what do I owe such a pleasant visit from one of high stature like yourself to my humble dingy cubicle?” Irvyn delivered smoothly. Sarcasm dripped from every word uttered, belying his cheerful countenance.

“Rest assured, Quinlan. If circumstance had not driven me to seek your company, I would not have bothered with the likes of you,” Karl bit back icily.

“My sentiments exactly. At least we finally agreed on something,” Irvyn grinned, unremorseful.

“Cut the crap. We have work to do.”

“‘We’? Have I misheard?” Irvyn placed a hand on his chest mockingly, feigning shock, fully aware that the action would certainly infuriate his superior.

“Yes. WE are required to meet up with the Minister’s PA,” Karl gritted, clenching and unclenching his fists in anger. “Get your lazy self moving. We have wasted too much time here,” he added before he turned and left, his robes billowing behind him.

“Oh, Merlin! This will prove to be interesting,” Irvyn chuckled, trailing after the Deputy Head.

However, an unbidden thought invaded Irvyn’s mind as the huge black door to the Department of Mysteries ominously slammed shut behind him.
Meeting with Ms. O’shea? Sigh…Why do I have a very bad feeling about this whole business?
